UC San Diego Issues Small Refunds for Portion of Spring 2020 Campus-based Fees

Some UC San Diego students registered during the Spring 2020 academic quarter are receiving a small credit of campus-based fees.
The credits range from a total of $1.98 for graduate students that paid the Graduate Student Activity Fee to $11.67 for undergraduate students that paid the Eleanor Roosevelt College Activity Fee. Students that paid the Sixth College Activity Fee will receive $9.94 and students that paid the Warren College Activity Fee will receive $6.10. Students enrolled in other undergraduate colleges will not receive a credit.
Beginning on Thursday, March 17, 2022, credits for eligible students will be posted to their student billing accounts and applied to eligible outstanding charges (if any). For students without any eligible outstanding charges, refunds will be distributed via direct deposit. For those without active direct deposit, UC San Diego will send a check by regular mail to the current mailing address on file in the Student Information System.
In a June 29, 2020 letter, then-UC President Janet Napolitano directed the campuses to analyze campus-based fees and – where appropriate and feasible – issue refunds or their equivalents for all net fees unexpended and unencumbered due to COVID-19 for Spring Quarter 2020.
To determine the credit amounts, the analysis was guided by principles referenced in Napolitano’s letter and was conducted with the assistance of an external accounting firm engaged by the UC Office of the President (UCOP).
Based upon the work of the external accounting firm, the appropriate credit amount for all of UC San Diego is approximately $144,000. The credit amount for each student was calculated based on the specific fees they incurred and the unexpended and unencumbered portion of that fee (if any). Campus-based fees — and therefore credits — vary by student level (i.e., undergraduate or graduate) and undergraduate college.
Other UC campuses are also issuing some credits. Credit amounts are different because campus-based fees vary widely from campus to campus.
