Spring Quarter Message from VC Satterlund

Satterlund

Student Affairs Colleagues and Friends,

As we enter spring quarter, I wish to take a moment to acknowledge the hard work and care you provide our students. Spring quarter, as you are well aware, is an exciting period – it’s the home stretch of the academic year filled with elections and appointments, celebrations, and send-offs. It is also a challenging time, as students strive to raise their GPAs, secure a summer internship, and determine where they will live come fall. Throughout these highs and lows, Student Affairs commits itself to supporting all students in their personal journeys and remains steadfast to the values of student development and wellbeing.

While we engage in this work, I invite you to take a moment to be aware of a few initiatives happening at the division level and campus wide. First, I have charged a steering committee reflective of our various Student Affairs units and collaborative partners, to draft a new strategic plan for Student Affairs. This will be a highly inclusive process where staff, students, and campus partners will have the opportunity to co-create Student Affairs at UC San Diego. At the April 30 All Staff Meeting, staff will participate in a facilitated exercise on mission, vision and forward thinking. Please plan to attend so that you may share your voice and experience.

Triton Days for first year and transfer students take place this quarter. Please check out the social media hashtag #futuretriton to get an early start on the excitement of our newest students. Additionally, many of you have put in countless hours supporting our students in the planning of Sun God and several of you will be volunteering your time that day to ensure a fun and safe experience for our students. There are many other additional events and activities this time of year, too many to recognize individually here, but I wish to acknowledge the time and energy you give and to say thank you.

As I close this message, I would like to acknowledge the legacy of Dr. Karen Calfas. While I worked with her only a short time, I was immediately drawn to her caring spirit and dedication to students, her staff, and colleagues. Your stories of her passion for wellness, keenness for planning, and overall kindness have conveyed to me how truly special she was. At our April 30 All Staff we will recognize Karen and her legacy.

Until our next meeting, I wish you all happy start to spring quarter.

Kind Regards,

Alysson
