Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP)

The Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) is a comprehensive group health insurance plan and is mandatory for all undergraduate students as a condition of enrollment with the university. The SHIP plan also includes dental benefits for preventative and basic services working in conjunction with the First Dental Health network (FDH). FDH offers dental services at discounted rates. See plan brochure for eligible benefits, waiting periods, and exclusions. Vision discounts are offered for enrollees at the Student Health Service Optometry Department. SHIP is assessed and automatically paid with registration fees.

Primary care is provided by Student Health Service (SHS). When you are within the determined radius of UCSD (see brochure for details), you must start your health care at SHS. Emergency services and eligible care rendered outside the determined radius of UCSD is exempt from the referral requirement. SHS is a full service accredited facility with onsite access to Board Certified Physicians, Certified Nurse Practitioners, laboratory, x-ray, and pharmacy services. Students with a serious sickness or injury that requires immediate care may be seen on a walk-in basis through the SHS Urgent Care for a minimal fee. All other services are by appointment. Appointments can be scheduled online through the SHS Web site (see above) or by calling (858) 534-8089.

SHIP offers coverage year round and worldwide to UCSD undergraduate students for a moderate premium and a low plan year deductible. Some SHIP benefits include, but are not limited to, outpatient services, emergency care, hospitalization, surgery, radiology, dental, and prescriptions. If a student needs additional services not available at SHS, SHIP allows SHS to refer a student via a preferred provider network to those physicians or facilities where these services are available. SHIP utilizes preferred provider networks for local and state medical care. For preferred providers in California, call California Foundation for Medical Care
at (800) 334-7341, or access their Web site at www.cfmcnet.org. For preferred providers outside California, call Community Care Network at (888) 685-7774, or access their Web site at www.ccnusa.com. For a First Dental Health network provider, call (800) 334-7244, or access their Web site at www.firstdentalhealth.com.
